Dating Apps and the Erosion of Social Order: A Conservative Reading

There is a passage in Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France that haunts me every time I open a newspaper and encounter yet another dispatch from the front lines of modern romance. Burke wrote of those "little platoons" — the family, the parish, the guild, the neighborhood — as the indispensable mediating structures between the solitary individual and the vast machinery of the state. Remove those platoons, he warned, and you do not liberate the citizen. You expose him, naked and unmoored, to forces he cannot name and cannot resist. I have spent seven years tracing the intellectual lineage of this warning through British and American conservative thought, and I confess that nothing in the contemporary landscape confirms Burke's anxiety more vividly than the transformation of courtship by algorithmic matchmaking platforms.

What Christine Emba documents in her recent public commentary on the ethics of digital romance — the statistical evidence of harassment, the psychological toll of perpetual rejection, the reduction of human persons to swipeable thumbnails — reads, to a conservative institutionalist, as a case study in what happens when an entire domain of social life is stripped of its traditional scaffolding. The dating application does not merely offer a new venue for meeting strangers. It dismantles, with breathtaking speed, the communal architecture within which romantic attachment was historically formed, tested, and sustained. The question this essay presses is not whether one prefers swiping to dancing at a parish social. The question is whether a society can dispense with the intermediate institutions of courtship and still produce the stable relational bonds upon which every other social order depends.
 

The Dissolution of Intermediate Institutions

For the greater part of Western history, finding a partner was not a private consumer choice executed in isolation. It was a communal affair, embedded in what sociologists call "thick" social environments and what Burke would have recognized as the natural hierarchy of belonging. One met a prospective spouse through family introductions, through shared worship, through the workplace, through the overlapping circles of a town small enough that reputations carried weight. Emba herself acknowledges this pattern: prior to the digital turn, the majority of couples met through friends, relatives, churches, schools, or professional communities. Each of those venues carried with it a web of mutual obligation, shared norms, and — critically — witnesses.

The conservative insight here is not sentimental nostalgia. It is structural. When a young man courted a young woman in a community where both sets of parents knew each other, where the local clergyman would notice an absence from Sunday service, where a broken promise became common knowledge by Friday, behavior was regulated not by a terms-of-service agreement but by the living pressure of shared life. Accountability was organic, distributed, and difficult to evade. One could not ghost a suitor when that suitor's sister sat two pews ahead of you every week.

The dating application severs this connective tissue entirely. Two strangers interact in a space free of common reference points. Neither belongs to the other's family network, professional circle, or faith community. The interaction is private to the point of invisibility. Emba's data from the Pew Research Center survey bears this out with uncomfortable precision: 56% of women report receiving unsolicited sexually explicit images; over 40% report persistent unwanted contact after attempting to end communication; 37% report being called offensive names; 11% report threats of physical harm. These are not anomalies. They are the predictable behavioral output of a system in which the social cost of cruelty has been reduced to approximately zero.

From a Burkean perspective, what has been lost is not merely convenience or charm. What has been lost is the institutional ecology that once made decent behavior the path of least resistance. The application does not create bad people. It removes the structures within which good habits were formed and within which bad behavior carried tangible consequences. This is the conservative diagnosis in its purest form: the problem is not human nature, which is constant; the problem is the institutional environment, which has been radically altered.
 

The Atomized Self and the Accountability Vacuum

Traditional conservatism, at least in its empiricist British lineage running from Burke through Michael Oakeshott, has always harbored a healthy suspicion of what Oakeshott called "rationalism in politics" — the notion that complex social practices can be redesigned from scratch by clever engineers who believe they have improved upon inherited wisdom. The dating application is, in its architectural logic, a rationalist project. It assumes that the messiness of communal courtship — the awkward introductions, the chaperoned conversations, the slow accumulation of trust through repeated encounters in shared spaces — is merely friction to be eliminated. Replace it with a profile, a photograph, a one-line biography, and an algorithm. Efficiency achieved.

Yet the conservative empiricist knows that what appears to be friction is often load-bearing structure. The slowness of traditional courtship was not a bug. It was the mechanism by which two people tested each other's character under the observation of others who had stakes in the outcome. A mother watching her daughter's suitor over the course of six months at family gatherings was conducting an evaluation that no compatibility quiz can replicate. She was reading for patience, for generosity, for the way he treated the waiter, for whether he kept his word about small things. These observations required time, proximity, and a community dense enough to generate repeated, unscripted encounters.

The application compresses this evaluative process into a fraction of a second. A thumb moves left or right. The judgment is rendered on the basis of a curated photograph and perhaps three sentences of self-description. Emba observes that this architecture privileges those who photograph well, who can craft a compelling marketing bio, who meet easily quantifiable specifications such as height. Those whose virtues are slower to reveal themselves — steadiness, humor that emerges in the third conversation rather than the first, a quiet kindness invisible in a headshot — are filtered out before they ever speak.

Sixty-four percent of men, Emba reports, say they have been made to feel insecure by the lack of messages they receive. The psychological injury here is not trivial, and a conservative social philosophy must take it seriously. Human beings were not constituted to absorb the volume of silent rejection that a gamified matching system delivers. In the older order, a man who was not interested in a particular courtship simply did not pursue it; the absence was ambient, not quantified, not delivered as a visible non-match in an interface designed to make you count your failures. The application transforms what was once a gentle social gradient into a binary verdict, repeated hundreds of times per week. This is not liberation. It is a new form of institutionalized humiliation, dressed in the language of choice and empowerment.
 

Gamification and the Market Logic Run Amok

Here the analysis must sharpen, for the conservative critique of dating applications is not identical to the progressive critique, and the distinction matters. A progressive objection might focus on the platforms' failure to protect marginalized users, or on the reproductive labor inequality embedded in who sends the first message. These concerns are legitimate. But the conservative objection runs deeper, into the metaphysics of the transaction itself.

The dating application gamifies courtship. It presents human persons as a deck of cards to be sorted, a marketplace of options through which one scrolls with the consumer's expectation of perpetual upgrade. Emba names this dynamic precisely: the illusion that there is always something better available, that no single relationship deserves sustained investment when an infinite catalogue of alternatives sits one swipe away. The psychological effect is what she calls a delay in settling down; the conservative reads it as the erosion of the disposition toward commitment itself.

Burke understood that social order rests not on contracts between abstract individuals but on habits of attachment formed over time within particular communities. Loyalty, fidelity, the willingness to repair rather than replace — these are not natural instincts. They are cultivated dispositions, grown in soil that rewards patience and penalizes caprice. The application architecture does the opposite. It rewards novelty-seeking. It penalizes depth by making depth unnecessary. Why labor through a difficult third month of getting to know one imperfect person when the interface promises a fresh start, a clean slate, a new set of photographs, forever?

This is the market logic that Burke and his intellectual heirs distrusted when applied to domains of life that are not properly market domains. The conservative does not oppose markets in commerce. The conservative objects to the colonization of non-market spheres — family, friendship, courtship, worship — by the transactional, replacement-oriented logic of the marketplace. When a person becomes a product to be evaluated against specifications, when a relationship becomes a service to be cancelled without cost, the moral vocabulary of the community impoverishes itself. What remains is choice without obligation, preference without duty, freedom without belonging.

One should note, with appropriate scholarly caution, that this critique does not demand the abolition of online meeting platforms. The conservative temperament is not revolutionary; it does not seek to tear down and rebuild. It seeks to reform, to re-embed, to restore what can be restored without denying what genuinely cannot. The question is one of proportion, of institutional balance, of whether the application supplements communal courtship or wholly replaces it.
 

Toward Gradual Reform: Re-embedding Romance in Community

What, then, does a conservative institutional response look like? It cannot be prohibition. It cannot be a return to chaperoned parlor visits, however charming the image. The conservative reformer works within the grain of existing reality, bending it gently back toward health rather than snapping it toward an imagined past.

Emba proposes an ethic she calls "willing the good of the other" — treating the person across the screen as an end rather than a means, ranking their flourishing alongside one's own. This is, in its philosophical bones, the golden rule rendered in the language of Thomistic personalism. A conservative recognizes it immediately as the moral substrate that intermediate institutions once enforced from the outside. When the external enforcement dissolves, the internal ethic must be deliberately cultivated. The task is not to legislate kindness. The task is to rebuild the conditions under which kindness becomes the habitual, socially reinforced response rather than a heroic individual act against the current.

Practically, this means several things, none of them radical, all of them gradual. It means communities — faith congregations, civic associations, professional guilds, neighborhood organizations — reclaiming their role as spaces where unmarried adults encounter one another in contexts richer than a profile picture. It means resisting the cultural pressure that treats every social gathering as a networking event and restores, instead, the older expectation that shared meals, shared labor, and shared worship are themselves the soil from which attachment grows. It means individuals choosing, as a matter of personal discipline, to supplement the application with the harder, slower, more vulnerable practice of speaking to strangers in person — in the supermarket, at the bar, in the queue at the post office. Emba herself gestures toward this: the bravery and social ability required to approach another human being face-to-face is, she notes, a healthy thing to cultivate whether one is using it for dating or not.

The conservative adds one structural point. Platform designers bear a moral responsibility that the current regulatory environment does not adequately enforce. If the architecture of a product predictably generates harassment, objectification, and psychological distress at the scale the Pew data indicates, that architecture is not neutral. A Burkean gradualist would not call for the state to ban dating applications. He would call for the slow accretion of norms, professional standards, and perhaps modest regulatory pressure that compel platform designers to build accountability back into the system — to restore, in digital form, some fraction of the social cost that the dissolution of community removed. Verification of identity. Consequences for persistent harassment. Design choices that slow the pace of evaluation rather than accelerating it. These are not revolutionary demands. They are the digital equivalent of the village knowing your name.

None of this will satisfy the radical, whether of the revolutionary left or the libertarian right. The radical left will say the critique ignores structural power; the libertarian right will say any regulation is paternalistic overreach. The conservative accepts neither objection. The point is not to perfect human romantic life. The point is to preserve the institutional conditions under which decent, stable, mutually respectful relationships remain possible at all. That is a modest aim. It is also, in Burke's formulation, the only aim worthy of a society that wishes to endure.

The dating application is not evil. It is a tool that has been allowed to become an environment, and environments shape the creatures within them. The conservative task, as always, is to tend the garden rather than worship the machine. Whether one swipes or one speaks across a crowded room, the underlying question is identical: do we approach the other as a person to be known, or as an option to be consumed? The answer we build into our institutions will determine, in large measure, the answer our children inherit.
