The emergence of factory farming as a global industrial system—now producing 70 billion chickens per year worldwide, confining sows in crates so narrow they cannot turn around, and generating environmental externalities that impose costs on every human community downstream—has created a mass of anomalies that the old paradigm cannot digest. The 26-story pig-factory buildings now under construction in East Asia represent not merely a scaling of an existing practice but a qualitative intensification that the anthropocentric framework was never designed to accommodate. When a system produces suffering on a scale that dwarfs every natural predator-prey interaction in evolutionary history, the moral paradigm built to handle small-scale, subsistence-level animal use begins to creak.

The old paradigm required no evidence and tolerated no uncertainty; the new paradigm acknowledges that its boundary is provisional, revisable, and in some regions genuinely indeterminate. That provisionality is not a weakness. In Popperian terms, it is the very feature that makes the framework scientific rather than dogmatic.
 

AI and the Next Demarcation Crisis

A further anomaly is emerging at the intersection of artificial intelligence research and moral philosophy. If the criterion for moral consideration is sentience rather than biological substrate, then the question of whether a sufficiently advanced artificial system could possess genuine conscious experience becomes not merely speculative but practically urgent. Against Linear Accumulation: Why Moral Progress Is Revolutionary

I must insist on a point that runs against a popular narrative. The history of moral consideration is not a story of steady, linear expansion—a widening circle that gradually includes more beings within its boundary. This Whiggish reading falsifies the actual structure of moral change. What we observe, instead, is punctuated equilibrium: long periods of stasis punctuated by rapid, discontinuous shifts. The psychological research is consistent with this picture. Studies showing that individuals who give to others report higher subjective well-being than those who spend equivalent resources on themselves suggest that the moral paradigm shift is not experienced as loss but as liberation. The old paradigm—hoard, compete, restrict moral concern to the in-group—was not merely unjust; it was, empirically, a suboptimal strategy for human flourishing. The new paradigm does not simply add beings to a list. It restructures the entire relationship between moral agent and moral patient, and that restructuring is what makes it revolutionary rather than cumulative.

What the next 48 years may bring—the development of cellular agriculture, plant-based protein systems that replicate the sensory properties of meat, and AI-driven alternatives to animal testing—will determine whether this revolution consolidates or remains a permanent minority position. The technological infrastructure for a post-factory-farming world is no longer hypothetical. The question is whether the paradigm shift in moral understanding will proceed fast enough to outpace the scaling of industrial animal production in regions where regulatory frameworks remain absent. Kuhn would caution us not to predict the timing of revolutions. He would also caution us that once the new paradigm achieves critical mass, the transition can be startlingly rapid.

The demarcation problem in moral philosophy, like its counterpart in the philosophy of science, will not be solved by a single decisive experiment. It will be resolved—or rather, it will dissolve—when the community of moral agents collectively recognizes that the old boundary was never drawn by nature but by convenience, by tradition, by the absence of sufficiently vivid empirical evidence. The evidence is no longer absent. The paradigm is in crisis. What follows is not accumulation. It is revolution.
