Instructor Bio: This keynote address is delivered by **Danna Freedman**, the Frederick George Keyes Professor of Chemistry at MIT and the Faculty Director of the MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT). Danna Freedman is a nationally recognized leader in quantum materials and information science. Her research group at MIT explores the synthesis and characterization of quantum materials, with a particular focus on molecular spin qubits and quantum coherence in chemical systems. She received her PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed postdoctoral research at Northwestern University before joining the MIT faculty. As QMIT's faculty director, she shapes the initiative's scientific vision, organizes its research pillars spanning quantum computing, sensing, simulation, materials, and networks, and leads efforts to build collaborative spaces and mechanisms for co-design between quantum researchers and domain experts.
Course Description: This keynote lecture traces the evolution of quantum science from its foundational theoretical origins a century ago to today's rapidly maturing quantum technologies. Danna Freedman outlines how decades of discovery in quantum mechanics, atomic physics, condensed matter, and information theory have converged to create a historic inflection point where quantum phenomena can be harnessed for practical advantage. She articulates QMIT's central vision: deliberately constructing shared spaces, mechanisms for teaming and collaboration, and opportunities for co-design that connect quantum creators with quantum beneficiaries.
