The glass cannot hold water on its own; it has no inherent power to do so. Its capacity is derivative, passed down from a more fundamental source.

For most of human history, this hierarchical model of causation shaped how people understood meaning and purpose. The world was seen as a layered order of being, stretching from mundane physical objects up to a first, unconditioned source of all existence. That source was not merely a trigger that set the universe in motion billions of years ago. It was a sustaining ground, holding every part of reality in place at every moment, and from it flowed not just existence but purpose, value, and moral order. To ask about the meaning of life was to ask about one’s place within this hierarchical order, one’s relation to the foundational principle that sustained everything.
The rise of instrumental rationality in the modern era gradually dismantled this way of thinking. The Enlightenment project of disenchantment sought to explain all natural phenomena through measurable, predictable horizontal causes, dismissing hierarchical accounts as metaphysical relics. What could not be quantified, tested, or manipulated was treated as not fully real. God, once the sustaining ground of all being, was reduced first to a distant first mover who flipped the first domino and then withdrew—the deistic view of the cosmos as a self-running machine. Eventually, even that distant first mover became unnecessary. The universe came to be seen as an infinite chain of horizontal causes with no beginning, no end, and no purpose beyond the blind operation of physical law.

The shift from hierarchical to exclusively horizontal thinking is not merely an intellectual development. It is a social process tied to the expansion of commodity exchange and industrial production. All qualitative differences are reduced to quantitative measurements, all unique things are reduced to interchangeable units of exchange value. Sustaining grounds, inherent purposes, objective values—none of these can be quantified, none can be used as tools, so none are treated as real.

The deistic image of God as a distant first cause perfectly mirrors this instrumental worldview. A God who only starts the machine and then walks away is a God compatible with a society that sees the world as a collection of resources to be managed and exploited. A God who continually sustains the world in being, by contrast, implies that reality has an inherent depth and purpose that cannot be reduced to human manipulation. That idea is incompatible with the totalizing claims of instrumental reason, so it is pushed to the margins of respectable thought.

The result of this process is not merely widespread religious disbelief. It is a broader collapse of the very idea that meaning could be something objective, something rooted in the nature of reality rather than projected onto it by human preference. When all causation is reduced to horizontal, instrumental chains, there is nowhere for objective meaning to reside. Every purpose, every value, every moral norm comes to be seen as a subjective choice, a personal preference, a feeling that individuals project onto a blank and indifferent universe. The author of Ecclesiastes, writing thousands of years ago, described all human endeavors as hebel—wind, vapor, absurdity. He accumulated wealth, pleasure, power, and wisdom, and found that all of it was fleeting and ultimately meaningless. Most people lived within shared normative frameworks—religious traditions, communal values, inherited ways of life—that gave their daily actions a sense of objective purpose. Those frameworks have largely dissolved in modern societies, replaced by a consumer culture that presents endless lifestyle options but no deeper reason to choose any of them. Nihilism is no longer a niche philosophical position. It has become the default background condition of ordinary life.
 

The Culture Industry and the Standardization of Value

The spread of nihilism as a mass phenomenon cannot be separated from the workings of the culture industry, a concept first developed by Horkheimer and Adorno to describe the industrial production of mass culture under capitalism. The culture industry turns art, entertainment, information, and even identity into standardized commodities, produced for profit and consumed like any other good. What was once a space for genuine meaning-making—art, religion, community—becomes just another sector of the market.

In the culture industry, values and meanings are packaged as products to be chosen by consumers. A person can pick up a self-help book to find purpose, attend a wellness retreat to find inner peace, adopt a political identity to find moral conviction, or follow a lifestyle influencer to find aesthetic fulfillment. All of these products promise meaning, but none of them deliver it in any lasting way, because their purpose is not to fulfill human needs but to generate profit. As soon as one meaning product loses its appeal, another is ready to take its place.

This system naturally produces a nihilistic outlook. If every value, every identity, every sense of purpose is just a commodity you can buy or sell, then none of them can be truly objective or ultimate. They are all just preferences, tastes, lifestyle choices. The culture industry does not fight nihilism; it feeds on it. It takes the existential void at the heart of modern life and fills it with an endless stream of distractions, pleasures, and pseudo-meanings, all designed to keep people consuming and conforming.
The link between nihilism and depression makes much more sense in this context. It is often said that nihilism causes depression, but the causal arrow runs just as strongly in the opposite direction. People who live in alienated social conditions, who spend their days doing meaningless work to survive, who feel disconnected from their communities and their own creative capacities, are naturally prone to depression. Nihilism is not the cause of that despair. It is the intellectual recognition of the reality that produces it. To call nihilism a personal failure is to blame the victim for a structural condition.

Nihilism also contains a critical kernel. To recognize that existing values have no objective foundation is to recognize that they are not natural or inevitable. They are social constructs, produced and reproduced by existing power structures. This insight can be paralyzing, leading to apathy and despair. This theory has a long history, but its most famous formulation came from A.J. Ayer in his 1936 book Language, Truth and Logic. Ayer, working within the logical positivist tradition, argued that a statement is only meaningful if it can be empirically verified or is true by definition. Moral statements fit neither category, so he concluded that they have no factual meaning at all. They are just expressions of feeling, designed to influence other people’s behavior.

From a critical theory perspective, emotivism is not a timeless truth about the nature of morality. It is an accurate description of how morality functions in an administered society. The administered society, as described by early Frankfurt School thinkers, is a society where all areas of life are organized according to instrumental rationality, where everything is managed, quantified, and controlled. They express outrage, disgust, or approval, and they trade factual claims about the consequences of different policies. Most apparent moral disagreement is actually disagreement about facts. Once the facts are settled, people often find that their underlying emotional reactions align. This is exactly what emotivist theory predicts.
The case of the incest taboo illustrates this dynamic clearly. Almost every human society has some form of prohibition against incest, and most people feel a strong visceral reaction against it. Yet when asked to explain why incest is wrong, people struggle to give consistent, rational justifications. Appeals to genetic risk fall apart when the parties cannot have children. Appeals to power imbalances fall apart when the parties are consenting adults of equal status. What remains is just the feeling of disgust, the raw emotional reaction. For the emotivist, this is all morality ever is: a set of emotional reactions dressed up in the language of objective truth.
 

The Limits of Emotivism and the Turn to Communicative Reason

Emotivism faces a well-known theoretical objection called the Frege-Geach problem. The problem arises when moral statements are embedded in larger sentences, such as conditional statements. For example, consider the argument: if murder is wrong, then murdering James is wrong; murder is wrong; therefore, murdering James is wrong. This argument appears logically valid. For an argument to be valid, its premises must be the kind of things that can be true or false. But if moral statements are just expressions of emotion, then “murder is wrong” has no truth value. The limitations of emotivism reflect the limitations of the social conditions that produce it. In a society where moral discourse has been reduced to emotional expression and power struggles, it is easy to conclude that morality is nothing more than feeling. But this conclusion mistakes the degraded state of modern moral life for the eternal nature of morality itself. It assumes that because morality has become subjective under current conditions, it must always be subjective.

Jürgen Habermas, the leading figure of the second generation of the Frankfurt School, developed his theory of communicative action as a response to this impasse. Habermas argued that the early critical theorists had focused too narrowly on the negative effects of instrumental rationality, overlooking the other dimension of rationality built into human language: communicative reason. When people speak to one another, they implicitly raise claims to truth, rightness, and sincerity. They presuppose that it is possible to reach mutual understanding through uncoerced dialogue.

For Habermas, moral norms are not objective facts built into the fabric of the universe, and they are not mere subjective feelings. They are the product of rational discourse among free and equal participants. A moral norm is valid if everyone affected by it could agree to it in a practical discourse free from domination and distortion. This approach avoids the problems of both objectivist moral theories and emotivist subjectivism. It locates moral normativity not in a transcendent cosmic order, but in the structure of human communication itself.

Habermas’s communicative turn represents a significant shift from the early Frankfurt School’s more pessimistic outlook. It does not abandon the critique of instrumental rationality, but it complements that critique with a positive account of rationality that can serve as the basis for social renewal. Whether communicative reason can actually overcome the distortions of power and capital in late capitalist societies remains an open question. The ideal of uncoerced dialogue is far from the reality of a media environment shaped by disinformation, economic inequality, and structural power imbalances. Even so, it provides a normative anchor for thinking about how moral life might be rebuilt beyond the limits of emotivism.
 

Rethinking the Path Beyond the Meaning Crisis

 

The Ambiguity of Agnostic Detachment

Faced with the collapse of transcendent meaning and the limitations of subjectivist ethics, many people adopt a position of agnostic detachment. They do not claim to know for certain that there is no objective meaning or moral truth, but they do not commit to any positive account either. They hold both religious and nihilistic claims at arm’s length, taking comfort in the fact that neither position can be definitively proven.

This agnostic stance has certain virtues. It avoids the dogmatism of both fundamentalist religion and militant atheism. It acknowledges the limits of human knowledge, the vastness of the mystery of existence. For many people, it provides a measure of psychological relief. If you are not convinced that life is ultimately meaningless, then the despair of nihilism loses some of its bite. If you are not convinced that there is a divine plan governing everything, then you are not crushed by the weight of religious guilt or the problem of suffering.

Agnosticism works well enough as a personal posture, but it has serious limits as a response to the social meaning crisis. It treats the problem of meaning as a purely intellectual question, something to be settled in the privacy of one’s own mind. It ignores the fact that the meaning crisis is not primarily a philosophical problem. It is a social problem, produced by concrete social structures: alienated labor, commodified culture, eroded community, the domination of instrumental reason.
Personal agnosticism does nothing to change those structures. It does not make work more meaningful, or culture less commodified, or communities more connected. It allows people to cope with the meaning crisis individually, but it does nothing to overcome it collectively. In fact, it can even serve to reinforce the status quo. If everyone focuses on managing their own personal relationship to meaning, no one works to change the conditions that make the crisis universal.
 

Negative Dialectics, Communicative Action, and the Renewal of Meaning

The critical theory tradition offers two complementary paths for thinking beyond the meaning crisis, neither of which relies on a return to pre-modern metaphysics or religious dogma. The first comes from Theodor Adorno’s negative dialectics. The second comes from Habermas’s theory of communicative action. Taken together, they provide a framework for thinking about how meaning can be reborn not as a given, objective fact, but as a lived achievement of free human beings in relation to one another.

Adorno’s negative dialectics rejects the drive of instrumental reason to reduce everything to a single, identical principle. It insists on the non-identity of thought and thing, on the gap between our concepts and the reality they try to capture. For Adorno, there is no single ultimate meaning of life, no foundational principle that explains everything. To look for such a principle is to fall back into the same identity thinking that produced the meaning crisis in the first place.

This might sound like just another form of nihilism, but it is not. Negative dialectics does not say there is no meaning. It says meaning is not something you can find as a fact, something out there in the world waiting to be discovered. Meaning emerges in the encounter between subject and object, between self and other, in the moments where instrumental control breaks down and we experience something that exceeds our concepts. It appears in genuine connection with other people, in aesthetic experience, in the resistance to injustice and suffering. It is not a single, universal answer, but a plurality of concrete, lived meanings that cannot be reduced to formulas or commodities.

Habermas’s approach complements this by focusing on the intersubjective conditions of meaning. For meaning to be sustainable, it cannot be a purely private experience. It has to be shared, communicated, and validated through dialogue with others. The communicative rationality inherent in language provides the foundation for shared norms, shared values, and shared understandings of the good life. These are not imposed from above by religion or tradition, but generated from below through the practice of discourse and cooperation.

Neither of these paths offers a quick fix or a simple answer to the meaning crisis. There is no formula for a meaningful life, no set of steps you can follow to solve the problem once and for all. That is part of the point. The search for a single, definitive answer is itself a product of instrumental rationality, a desire to treat meaning like a problem to be solved with the right tool.

Overcoming the meaning crisis requires more than intellectual argument. It requires practical transformation of the social conditions that produce alienation and nihilism. It requires work that is meaningful and creative, not just a means to survival. It requires culture that serves human needs rather than corporate profit. It requires communities where people can participate fully as equals, where dialogue is not distorted by power and inequality. It requires, in short, a society organized around human flourishing rather than instrumental efficiency and capital accumulation.

The meaning crisis will not be solved by proving the existence of God or refuting nihilism on philosophical grounds. It will be solved by building a world where people can live meaningful lives together, where the value of human existence is not something we have to argue about, but something we experience every day.
