Instead of asking how we can maximize future welfare according to our current values, we can ask how we can honor the dignity of future people by leaving them a world where they can thrive on their own terms. This shift in framing changes the kinds of interventions we prioritize, favoring community resilience, democratic governance, and sustainable systems over top-down technical solutions that treat future people as passive beneficiaries. By framing charitable giving as a kind of investment decision, we risk reducing the people we seek to help to interchangeable units of welfare, erasing their dignity, their particularity, and their agency.

Continental political philosophy, with its long reflection on totalitarianism, violence, and the ethical relationship between self and other, offers a critical corrective to this narrowing. It reminds us that morality is not just about producing outcomes in the world, but about the kind of people we become and the kind of relationships we build with one another. The love ethic, rooted in virtue and centered on the dignity of the other, gives voice to this broader understanding of moral life. It invites us to move beyond calculation to encounter, beyond aggregate metrics to particular dignity.
