The practical implications of this research are clear, though not always easy to implement. Feedback-rich classrooms share several structural features that distinguish them from traditional assessment environments.
First, feedback is separated from grading. Students receive comments on their work before they receive a score, and the comments are framed as guidance for improvement rather than justification for a grade. This separation is critical because grades hijack attention. When students see a grade first, they often ignore the comments entirely. When they receive comments first, they engage with them more deeply.
Second, revision is built into the instructional cycle. Students are expected to revise based on feedback, and the revision is assessed separately from the original submission. This creates a clear incentive to engage with feedback and normalizes the idea that learning is an iterative process. The research base is robust. The implementation challenges are real but surmountable. The question is whether we have the will to change.
