This is not the straightforward prosocial story that awe enthusiasts like to tell. If awe primarily works through self-diminishment among those who can least afford to help, and through value alignment among those who can most afford to help, the net effect on helping behavior becomes a function of resource availability rather than emotional transformation. The emotion is not doing the heavy lifting; the structural conditions are.
My own field experiments on volunteer motivation have consistently shown that helping behavior is rarely purely altruistic. People help because it feels good, because it enhances their social standing, because it reduces guilt, or because they expect reciprocal benefit in the future. The awe literature has been remarkably silent on this point, preferring to frame awe as a self-transcendent emotion that lifts people above base self-interest.
But the meta-analytic finding that sharing and volunteering correlate more strongly with awe than helping does suggests a reward-signaling explanation. Sharing and volunteering are public, visible, and socially valorized forms of prosociality. Helping—particularly emergency helping—is often anonymous, unobserved, and unacknowledged. If awe were truly about other-oriented concern rather than self-oriented reward, we would expect the opposite pattern: the most costly, least visible forms of helping should show the strongest effects. They do not.
The Cirque du Soleil study itself raises this question. Lotto’s research showed that awe increases comfort with uncertainty and risk-taking. But risk-taking in what domain? The study did not measure whether awe made people more likely to run toward a stranger in distress or more likely to engage in socially rewarded forms of risk-taking like public performance or creative expression. The distinction matters. An emotion that makes people more comfortable with uncertainty in general is not the same as an emotion that makes people more willing to absorb personal cost for another’s benefit.
Consider the experimental design of typical awe-helping studies. Participants are often told that their helping behavior will be observed, recorded, or evaluated. The demand characteristics are enormous. When you put someone in a lab, induce an emotionally elevated state, and then present a helping opportunity, the social desirability bias is almost impossible to disentangle from the genuine prosocial effect. Participants know what the experimenter wants to see. They have been primed to feel connected and expansive. Of course they help more. The question is whether they would help in the absence of an audience.
If the goal is to increase helping behavior through awe-based interventions, the evidence base is thinner than the promotional rhetoric suggests. The meta-analysis shows a positive correlation, but correlation is not intervention efficacy. The studies that have attempted to induce awe in real-world settings—rather than in controlled laboratory environments—have produced mixed results, with effect sizes that vary dramatically based on context, population, and helping measure.
The SES moderation finding is particularly instructive for intervention design. If awe activates different psychological pathways in different socioeconomic groups, a one-size-fits-all awe intervention will inevitably be inefficient. Moreover, the finding that state awe increases money helping but not time helping suggests that the practical utility of awe-based interventions is limited to the cheapest forms of assistance. If the goal is to increase charitable donations, awe might be a useful tool—though even here, the effect is modest and context-dependent. If the goal is to increase the kind of helping that actually matters in emergencies—the kind that requires time, effort, and personal risk—awe appears to be largely ineffective.
Let me be direct about what the evidence actually supports. Awe is a real emotion with measurable effects on cognition and behavior. It makes people feel more connected to others. It increases comfort with uncertainty. It correlates with various forms of prosociality, particularly sharing and volunteering. These are not trivial findings. But they are also not the universal altruism engine that popular accounts suggest.
The cost-benefit calculus of awe-induced helping looks something like this: the emotional experience of awe produces a generalized prosocial intention that is most likely to manifest in low-cost, high-visibility helping behaviors. It does not reliably produce emergency intervention, sustained assistance, or personally costly helping. The mechanisms are heavily moderated by socioeconomic status, context, and the social visibility of the helping opportunity. The responsibility diffusion that characterizes collective awe experiences may actually undermine the very helping behaviors that awe is supposed to promote.
This is not cynicism; it is the proper skepticism that any empirical researcher should bring to a claim about human behavior. I have spent six years watching people fail to help in situations where the bystander effect predicts they will fail. I have run enough experiments to know that emotional elevation alone is not enough to overcome the structural and psychological barriers to helping. Awe may open the door to prosocial intention, but it does not push people through it—especially when the cost of helping is high.
