In our lab, when participants engage in autobiographical memory retrieval involving unresolved guilt or anticipatory dread, theta band power (4–8 Hz) increases dramatically in the midline frontal sites, particularly Fz and FCz. Theta amplitude in these regions correlates strongly with subjective ratings of emotional conflict, not with the valence of the emotion itself. A participant remembering a joyful reunion and one remembering a painful betrayal can produce nearly identical theta bursts if both memories carry unresolved cognitive dissonance. Bravery, operationally defined in our studies as the ability to maintain task performance during negative autobiographical recall, does not reduce this theta signature. Instead, brave responders show earlier onset of lateralized alpha desynchronization (8–12 Hz) over left dorsolateral prefrontal sites, approximately 180 milliseconds faster than avoidant responders. That 180-millisecond gap is where integration happens. It is the window in which top-down regulatory signals arrive before limbic arousal cascades into behavioral withdrawal.
