In actual capitalist societies, the distribution of opportunities to be wrong—and to survive being wrong—is radically unequal. A tenured professor can publicly revise their position without career damage; a precarious worker cannot. Marginalized communities have historically borne the violent consequences of dominant groups’ errors while being denied the authority to name those errors as such. Any serious appropriation of Schulz’s thesis must therefore include a material analysis of who gets to be wrong safely and whose mistakes are criminalized, pathologized, or erased.

This brings us back to the question of emancipation. If instrumental rationality teaches us to fear error, and if communicative rationality requires us to embrace it, then the path forward involves transforming both our internal dispositions and our external institutions simultaneously. We need pedagogical practices that reward revision over first-draft perfection. We need organizational cultures that distinguish between negligent harm and honest miscalculation. We need media ecosystems that treat changing one’s mind as evidence of integrity rather than weakness. None of these reforms will abolish the anxiety of being wrong—that anxiety is existentially irreducible—but they can redistribute its burdens and convert its energies from defensive self-protection into collaborative sense-making.
