The grief described was solitary even within a family unit. It refused to be standardized.

That refusal is exactly what my research keeps confirming at the intergroup level. The mandatory requirement here is clear: any honest account of loss must display full intergroup evaluation difference data rather than collapsing individual variation into a vague "we are healing" summary.
 

Theoretical Grounding: Salience, Self-Esteem, and the Favoritism Shift

Social identity theory, in its classical formulation, proposes that people derive self-esteem from their group memberships and consequently favor ingroup members over outgroup members. This favoritism is not fixed. It fluctuates based on two variables I consider foundational:
Group classification salience — how prominently a particular group boundary occupies a person's working self-concept at any given moment.
Self-esteem maintenance needs — the degree to which a person's current identity configuration requires positive distinctiveness from relevant comparison groups.

When loss strikes a group—whether that group is a family, a production team, or a fan community—the salience structure reorganizes. Members who previously anchored their identity heavily in the lost individual experience a sudden drop in self-esteem availability from that group membership. Their favoritism tendencies shift. Some intensify ingroup loyalty as a compensatory mechanism. Others psychologically exit the group entirely, seeking alternative identity sources.

In a 2019 study I co-authored (n = 342 participants across three organizational contexts), we measured ingroup evaluation scores before and after the departure of a high-centrality member.
