This shift will make resistance feel far more accessible to ordinary people, who will no longer believe they need to be exceptional to participate.
Third, mutual aid and collective care will be recognized as the foundation of sustainable courage. Movements are increasingly moving away from the old model that glorifies burnout and self-sacrifice, and toward a model that centers rest, care, and healing. This shift will allow people to practice courage sustainably, for years and decades, rather than burning out after one burst of protest energy.
There are many important directions for future research and practice. We need far more documentation of ordinary, anonymous acts of courage in movements, to counter the dominant narrative that centers only famous leaders. We need more research on how art and creative practice spread courage and build movement identity. Most of all, we need to teach courage as a practice to young people, so that a new generation grows up knowing they have the power to change the world, one small brave act at a time.
